Third International Roundtable at
Renault Guyancourt,
April 8, 2010

The Third Roundtable took place on April 8, 2010. It was hosted by Renault in
Guyancourt (France). The goal of the 2010 Roundtable
was to discuss results from projects carried out in 2009 and early 2010.

The platinum mining industry and their Association (IPA)

Automobile manufacturers and their Association

Environmental and social NGOs in both producing and consuming countries
-
Government (Germany)

Research and Consulting institutes
met at Renault Technocenter Guyancourt to discuss sustainable solutions for the future production and use of platinum group metals, focussing on mining in South Africa and recycling in Russia.

During the first part of the programme, there were presentations by Anglo Platinum and the South African NGO The Benchmarks Foundation on the social sustainability of PGM mining. The focus was on community engagement.

During the second part of the programme, there were contributions from Greenpeace Russia, the Öko-Institute, Auto Recycling Nederland and the German Federal Environment Agency on the issue of better collection of catalytic converters and better recycling, especially in Russia.
The meeting was attended by 21 participants from 7 countries.
The roundtable has shown a high level of interest in the issue and a willingness to engage in constructive discussions about practical solutions and opportunities.
